The 11th edition of OpenNebulaCon took place from June 25 to 27, marking three days of insights and discoveries about the latest trends in the Cloud-Edge continuum, the impact of AI on the DevOps ecosystem, and developments within our platform. This year’s event solidified the success of our online format, with over 55 speakers and 35 companies participating.

What’s Next for Cloud and AI

Thanks to Iguane Solutions, we delved into their initiatives for training AI models. As highlighted at the session’s start, AI is no longer a future concept but a present reality. This session, co-hosted with AI Sweden, a long-time partner of OpenNebula Systems, showcased how AI Sweden leverages OpenNebula Cloud for their AI workloads and how Iguane Solutions supports data scientists in running these workloads efficiently. You can watch the session below or visit our YouTube channel for more details.

Using OpenNebula: Real-World Experiences

We also heard from FullstackS and Pegasus, both of whom have been using OpenNebula for over a decade. Pegasus, one of FullStackS’ first clients, shared their journey with an honest and insightful session on their long-term use of OpenNebula.

Case Study: Migrating from VMware

Encore Technologies shared their compelling use case on migrating from VMware to OpenNebula. Bradley Bishop, DevOps Manager at Encore Technologies, provided a clear and detailed explanation of their migration process. Neal Hansen from our team introduced the session, offering tips on using One-Swap and other considerations. This session is highly recommended for those interested in migration strategies.

Future Directions for OpenNebula Systems

Looking ahead to 2025, OpenNebula Systems is gearing up for significant developments. Our efforts in the last two quarters of this year are focused on reaching key milestones. Expect changes in our roadmap, enhanced opportunities for project contributions, a new partner program, and a more engaged community. Check out our staff-led sessions for more insights into our future plans.

Online Panels: Expert Discussions

This edition featured more panels than ever before, providing a platform for experts with diverse backgrounds to share their perspectives. Our panel on Telco 5G with open-source solutions explored the future of development and the role of OpenNebula’s edge computing capabilities. Another panel discussed the open-source landscape for virtual machines, addressing the current situation with CentOS and the reliable alternatives such as AlmaLinux, RockyLinux, and Oracle Linux.

Additional panels covered topics like Cloud Providers, Multi-Cluster Kubernetes, Confidential Computing, and Multi Edge-Cloud, emphasizing the importance of OpenNebula and open source in realizing these projects effectively.

Cognit Project and AI Framework

On the third day, we focused on the Cognit project, where we are leading efforts to enhance AI’s impact on smart cities, energy, and cybersecurity. The day included two panels, a framework deployment demo, and a presentation on the project’s current status and OpenNebula Systems’ leadership in cloud and edge computing innovation.

Looking Ahead to Next Year

We are already excited about the 12th edition of OpenNebulaCon, where we will present the progress and results of this year’s projects, particularly those related to IPCEI-CIS. Expect to see how AI integrates into the OpenNebula platform and hear more success stories about escaping vendor lock-in.

For now, you can watch the entire 2024 conference on demand through our dedicated YouTube playlist or directly on the OpenNebulaCon page, which also features information about our sponsors and participating companies.

We extend our gratitude to the IPCEI-CIS and COGNIT projects, our sponsors Iguane Solutions, Storpool, and FullStackS, and all the speakers and companies that made this edition possible. See you next year!
