It’s always a joy to attend in-person events, even more if they take place in beautiful spots! Right after the eventful Cloud Expo Europe in Madrid, I had the pleasure to participate earlier this month in the Open Source Experience in Paris. Despite the current situation, this was a great event, including a showroom with over 70 exhibitors from the Tech sector and more than 150 talks, round tables, and debates.

My talk was focused on the potential of open source technologies—especially edge computing—for the EU Telecom Industry, and how it is already being used to ensure interoperability and digital sovereignty when exploring how to build Europe’s next generation edge cloud through projects like GAIA-X and IPCEI-CIS.

Here are some key takeaways from my session: 

• I offered an introduction to the EU-funded ONEedge project: OpenNebula’s ONEedge is a distributed cloud management platform that aggregates on-demand infrastructure resources across multiple edge locations to enable innovative and low-latency next-generation services
• I analyzed why Europe has a unique opportunity to use edge computing to bring balance to the cloud market, currently dominated by a few (non-EU) hyperscalers. In this process, the active involvement of the European Telecom/5G providers will be crucial.
• I explained how companies are going to need vendor-neutral, application-agnostic middleware solutions to manage both their edge cloud infrastructure and application deployments.
• I argued that EU open source technology providers are going to play a key role in helping the European industry to build open platforms in a sustainable way, and in strengthening its technical and R&D capabilities on the basis of the collaborative model that open source provides.
