FOSDEM 2026: Open Source Beyond the Hype

Some events are fixed points in the calendar, unavoidable appointments for anyone passionate about open source—especially in Europe. FOSDEM 2026 was once again one of those moments. Now in its 26th edition, the event proved that open source is well beyond hype or short-lived trends. With more than 8,000 developers and enthusiasts from around the world, this free and community-driven conference continues to set the direction for the industry: where development is heading, which conversations matter most, and who is shaping the future of technology.

OpenNebula Systems actively contributed to this year’s agenda with four talks across the Virtualization & Cloud Infrastructure, Network, and AI Plumbers devrooms. Every session was fully packed, followed by lively Q&A and extended hallway discussions—often the most valuable “devroom” of all.

In addition to the talks, we also had the opportunity to host a booth at the event. This gave attendees the chance to connect with us directly, learn more about the OpenNebula platform, discover the initiatives we’re currently leading, and dive deeper into our Fact8ra.AI initiative for federated AI factories. While this wasn’t our first time with a booth at FOSDEM, this year clearly marked a special milestone for our team. Conversations flowed easily as people stopped by, exploring what we’re building and interacting with our experts.

All four OpenNebula talks took place on Saturday and highlighted the growing relevance of our work within the global open source ecosystem. The day started with a demonstration of how to easily install OpenNebula on a Raspberry Pi and turn it into an open source edge cloud. The room was full, with strong interest from attendees keen to explore how IoT devices can be connected using open source tools.

Interest only grew with the second talk of the day. In a completely full 200-seat room, we presented the work behind OneAI, our brand-new open source framework for managing AI models at scale. The talk emphasized the importance of standards and neutrality to transform complex AI lifecycle operations into a streamlined, infrastructure-native workflow.

The third OpenNebula session returned to the Virtualization & Cloud Infrastructure devroom, where we showcased our pilot integration with Prowler to identify vulnerabilities in open source hybrid clouds. Once again, the room was packed, with particular attention from attendees interested in Confidential Computing and security practices.

The final talk took place in the Network devroom, where we presented our contributions to the O-RAN endeavour, focusing on how to build an open source private 5G network. With an emphasis on latency and network communications, our talk highlighted how OpenNebula can play a key role in building secure, reliable private 5G deployments.

As always, see you all at FOSDEM next year!
