The release of OpenNebula 7.0 marked an important milestone in our journey toward a more flexible, secure, and future-proof cloud management platform. With its new architecture, redesigned Sunstone interface, and growing set of hybrid and edge capabilities, 7.0 laid the foundation for the next generation of OpenNebula.
Now, with OpenNebula 7.0.1, we’re taking that foundation further. This release comes packed with substantial updates and new capabilities that extend GPU support for high-performance workloads, enhance storage performance, improved VM security, and deepen cloud-native integration.
Advancing GPU-Accelerated Infrastructure
To meet the growing demand for AI, ML, and data analytics workloads, this release adds:
- GPU Monitoring: Collects metrics (utilization, memory, temperature) for GPUs assigned to VMs or containers.
- NVIDIA MIG Support: Optimizes workload efficiency and isolation on NVIDIA GPUs.
We’re also collaborating with NVIDIA on GB200 certification, ensuring optimal performance and compatibility with next-generation GPU hardware.
Enhancing Storage Efficiency
Storage performance and flexibility have always been central to OpenNebula, and this release brings key enhancements to optimize I/O and backup operations across multiple backends:
- Multi-tier Storage Caching – Uses fast SSD/NVMe as cache in front of slower storage to improve I/O performance.
- Incremental Backups are now supported across multiple backends:
- Ceph: Supports incremental snapshots and backups from Ceph RBD volumes, saving both time and space.
- LVM: Enables delta-based backups of logical volumes to optimize storage efficiency.
- NetApp: Adds native support for incremental snapshots and efficient backup workflows.
- Veeam: Leverages Veeam integration to perform efficient incremental VM backups.
Strengthening Virtual Machine Security
Security remains a top priority for OpenNebula users. Version 7.0.1 introduces:
- Virtual TPM: Provides virtualized Trusted Platform Module support for enhanced VM security and Windows 11 compatibility.
- SAML 2.0 Support: Enables federated authentication and single sign-on for streamlined identity management.
These additions reinforce OpenNebula’s commitment to enterprise-grade security and compliance.
Deepening Cloud-Native Integration
To better support containerized workloads, OpenNebula 7.0.1 introduces the OpenNebula CSI Driver, integrating with Kubernetes through the Container Storage Interface (CSI) for dynamic volume provisioning.
This provides DevOps teams with a unified platform to manage persistent storage across both VMs and containers under a single control plane.
