Smarter VM Storage Migration in OpenNebula 7.4

Datastore rebalancing, hardware refreshes and storage maintenance are routine tasks for cloud administrators. They can involve moving VM disks between datastores, which in many environments still requires powering off VMs and scheduling maintenance windows.

OpenNebula simplifies these operations with Live Storage Migration, which allows you to move running VM disks between system datastores without interrupting workloads. In OpenNebula 7.4, this capability goes a step further: the OpenNebula Distributed Resource Scheduler (OneDRS) can now include storage migrations alongside host migrations when optimizing cluster resources.

In this session, you’ll learn how Live Storage Migration works, see it in action, and find out how to configure it in OneDRS.

Agenda

• Introduction: Common storage maintenance scenarios and the key differences between host live migration and storage live migration.
• How It Works: A closer look at the migration process, from target datastore validation to disk copying on the KVM Host.
• Live Demo: See how to migrate the disks of a running VM between datastores using the CLI and the redesigned Sunstone interface.
• Storage Migrations in OneDRS: Learn how to enable datastore migrations, configure migration thresholds, set priorities, and exclude specific VMs.
• Requirements and Limitations: Understand supported datastore types, cross-Cluster migration scenarios, and what to check before starting a migration.
• Q&A Session: Get answers to your questions about your storage architecture, datastore types and migration scenarios.
