Built-In Ubuntu Pro Enhances Security and Simplicity for OpenNebula Customers
OpenNebula Systems is excited to announce a new collaboration with Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu and provider of open source security, support, and services. Through this collaboration, OpenNebula customers will now have the option to use Ubuntu Pro as a built-in, security maintained Linux operating system for their hypervisor nodes—simplifying OpenNebula installation and adoption while strengthening security and compliance.
OpenNebula is a widely adopted cloud management platform for virtualization, enterprise cloud, and multi-cluster Kubernetes management. With enterprise-grade features and integrations with partners such as NetApp and Veeam, OpenNebula enables organizations to consolidate and modernize their infrastructure with confidence. Thanks to strong partnerships with NVIDIA, Dell Technologies, and Ampere, OpenNebula is rapidly becoming the preferred platform for managing and orchestrating secure, multi-tenant, sovereign AI Factories.
With this partnership, Canonical ensures that OpenNebula deployments run seamlessly on Ubuntu, with Ubuntu Pro offered as a built-in option on hypervisor nodes. This integration enhances security, maintenance, and reliability across the stack. Ubuntu Pro—one of the leading operating systems for AI, Kubernetes, and virtualized workloads—provides over 10 years of security maintenance for Ubuntu and open source packages, along with Canonical Livepatch and support for FIPS 140-3–compliant workloads.
Security from Top to Bottom
Starting with the 7.0 release, OpenNebula Systems will begin shipping Ubuntu Pro as an additional operating system option for hypervisor nodes. Customers will benefit from Canonical’s reputation for delivering secure, stable images and its proven ability to rapidly address high and critical CVEs. With new vulnerabilities emerging every day, production systems require frequent updates—Ubuntu Pro ensures that customers can mitigate risk with confidence.
Enterprise-Grade Open Source Across the Stack
With built-in Ubuntu Pro, OpenNebula customers will benefit from enterprise-grade security maintenance. This includes expedited security patch management, integrated lifecycle updates, and a robust process for reviewing, prioritizing, and remediating vulnerabilities. By integrating Ubuntu Pro into OpenNebula’s enterprise cloud and AI Factory solutions, customers achieve a securely-designed, future-proof platform that combines operational simplicity with long-term reliability.
Seamless Infrastructure Provisioning with MAAS Integration
As part of the collaboration with Canonical, OpenNebula is also adding integration with Metal-as-a-Service (MAAS) to enable fully automated provisioning and lifecycle management of bare-metal resources within OpenNebula environments. MAAS acts as a bare-metal provisioning layer that transforms physical servers into cloud-ready resources seamlessly managed by OpenNebula. In this integration, MAAS automates the entire hardware lifecycle—handling discovery, firmware updates, and node commissioning—while OpenNebula imports and orchestrates these nodes as part of its infrastructure pool. This allows administrators to manage both virtualized and bare-metal resources through a unified interface, combining MAAS’s automated hardware provisioning with OpenNebula’s advanced orchestration, multi-tenancy, and hybrid cloud management to deliver a flexible, high-performance, and fully integrated cloud-edge platform.
