We’re excited to share the highlights from OpenNebula TechDay Madrid 2024. The event brought together cloud enthusiasts and industry experts to explore the latest advancements in OpenNebula and its pivotal role in enabling organizations to adopt cost-effective, open source cloud solutions.
Shaping the Future of Cloud Computing
The day kicked off with a warm welcome and an engaging discussion on why OpenNebula stands out as a flexible, vendor-neutral alternative to VMware. With Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware reshaping the industry, OpenNebula’s robust features are empowering enterprises to redefine their cloud strategies.
A key highlight was the presentation of OneSwap, OpenNebula’s powerful migration tool for transitioning from VMware to OpenNebula KVM. This automated solution eliminates the complexities of VM migration, making it easier for enterprises to embrace new platforms.
Real-World Success Stories
After the coffee break, David Artuñedo, CEO at OnLife Networks, Telefónica’s intrapreneur startup, presented how Telefónica leverages OpenNebula to train and deploy large language models (LLMs) on GPU-optimized infrastructures. By combining the flexibility of public clouds with the cost control of on-premise deployments, OpenNebula has become a key enabler in Telefónica’s AI infrastructure strategy, ensuring scalability as the demand for model training grows.
Next, Dan Mårtensson and Jesper Hassing from Dustin, a leading IT services provider in Northern Europe, shared how OpenNebula helped them streamline their infrastructure at scale. Using StorPool’s Software-Defined Storage (SDS) and OpenNebula-managed KVM, Dustin replaced legacy systems with a scalable, efficient solution for storage, backup, and disaster recovery across multiple data centers, significantly reducing vendor lock-in.
Yusuf Yildiz from LINBIT concluded this segment with an engaging case study showcasing the integration of LINSTOR, their SDS solution, with OpenNebula. He highlighted a real-world use case involving a large-scale deployment featuring 348 nodes, 22,000 resources, and an impressive 7.6 PiB of storage capacity. This example underscored the potential of hybrid architectures that combine hyper-converged and disaggregated storage strategies.
“If you’re looking for a solution that helps you build infrastructures you can rely on without being locked into that company, LINSTOR and OpenNebula can be the solution for you.” – Yusuf Yildiz, Solutions Architect at LINBIT
Hands-On Demos and Roadmap
The live demo of OneSwap showed how seamlessly workloads can migrate from VMware to OpenNebula, demonstrating the straightforward and efficient nature of the migration process.
The event also featured a presentation of OpenNebula 6.10, showcasing a sleek new user interface, streamlined deployment via the OneDeploy tool, and enhanced backup capabilities with Restic and Prometheus integration, along with an exciting glimpse into the development roadmap ahead.
Building Connections and the Way Forward
The event concluded with a vibrant networking session, where attendees exchanged ideas and forged valuable connections. It was inspiring to hear from users, customers, partners, and contributors, all reaffirming the strength of our community and our shared commitment to building open, innovative cloud solutions.
