OpenNebula Validated by Linux Foundation Sylva for Network Virtualization Infrastructure

We’re thrilled to announce that OpenNebula has officially become a Sylva Validation Platform. This achievement builds on our commitment as a General Member of the Linux Foundation Sylva Project and our support for this initiative since its inception. This milestone marks a significant addition to the Sylva technological ecosystem, as we launch the very first validation platform built on OpenNebula, offering a powerful open source alternative to the existing OpenStack-based solutions.

A New Chapter for the Sylva Validation Center

The Sylva Project was born from a critical need: to create an open source, production-grade Telco Cloud stack that meets industry requirements for privacy, security, and energy efficiency. A cornerstone of this initiative is the Sylva Validation Center, which provides a standardized environment for validating Cloud-Native Network Functions (CNFs) and ensuring they can run seamlessly across different infrastructure implementations.

Until now, the validation landscape has been dominated by platforms running directly on bare metal or on top of OpenStack. By introducing a Validation Platform on OpenNebula, we’re offering a sovereign European alternative for the virtualization layer, proving that the Sylva framework is truly platform-agnostic.

“Having a new Validation Platform with OpenNebula demonstrates how Cloud-Native architectures guarantee openness, portability and diversity for the Telco industry as promoted by Sylva.”

Guillermo Carreto, Sylva Validation Program Lead, Telefónica

Why This Matters

As the telco industry moves toward 5G and 6G, operators are looking to move away from rigid, monolithic infrastructures. They require choice and the ability to select the right tool for the right layer of the stack.

This new validation platform demonstrates:

  • True Interoperability: CNF vendors can now validate their solutions on OpenNebula, ensuring their software is robust enough to run not just on one specific stack, but across the diverse multi-technology environments found in real-world networks.
  • Platform Diversity: By broadening the validation ecosystem, we’re fostering an open, multi-vendor landscape—a core mission of the Sylva Project—and offering operators a proven, European-built alternative for their virtualization layer.
  • Streamlined Cloud Management: OpenNebula is renowned for its simplicity and low operational footprint. Validating on this platform confirms that Sylva is compatible with streamlined, lightweight virtualization layers, offering operators a highly efficient alternative to complex legacy stacks for managing their compute resources.

Join Us in Building the Future of a Sovereign Telco Cloud

Our validation platform is now open for business. We invite CNF vendors and ecosystem partners to bring their workloads to OpenNebula. Whether you’re optimizing for the core or the edge, by validating on our platform, you ensure your solutions are ready for the next generation of telecommunications infrastructure.
