Back in June we already announced that OpenNebula, as part of its ONEedge initiative—the EU-funded project to build the first open source Edge Computing platform in Europe—was contributing to GAIA-X with its expertise in distributed and federated cloud environments, hyperconverged cloud infrastructures, complex storage and virtual networking architectures, management and automation tools for large cloud deployments, and edge computing.
We are now delighted to confirm that OpenNebula Systems has joined this pan-European project as a Day-1 Member of the GAIA-X AISBL (in incorporation), the international non-profit association that is going to provide a formal structure to this initiative, coordinating the efforts of the GAIA-X Community, promoting international cooperation, and developing the necessary regulatory frameworks and rules to ensure the interoperability and reliability of the providers, services and data sources made available through GAIA-X. This announcement has taken place during the GAIA-X Summit (Nov 18-19, 2020), an event that marks an important milestone for the project! 🚀
🇪🇺 The GAIA-X project supports the goals of the European data strategy, which emphasizes the economic and social opportunities of data as well as European values and laws (e.g. GDPR). The common goal of the organizations joining the project is to create GAIA-X as a basis for a sovereign, European data infrastructure, which provides interoperability between different data creating and processing entities via federated services. One of our main tasks will be to make sure that OpenNebula Cloud Service Providers and Corporate Users can get the most out of the GAIA-X federated cloud infrastructure and of the resources that will be made available through this new European virtual hyperscaler.
ℹ️ The OpenNebula Webinar on GAIA-X that took place on September 8, 2020 is available on demand: https://opennebula.io/webinars Many thanks to our amazing guest speakers, Andreas Weiss (Director of EuroCloud Germany) and Mirko Lampe (Coordinator of GAIA-X Workstream 2—Technical Implementation).
We have created a GAIA-X Working Group within the OpenNebula Community, so Cloud Service Providers and Corporate Users interested in GAIA-X, or planning to join this initiative, please let us know by sending an email to email@example.com 📡
