OpenNebula 7.0 Phoenix Has Landed!

We’ve officially released OpenNebula 7.0 “Phoenix”, our most ambitious update yet—and it’s a major leap forward for cloud and edge infrastructure.

This release introduces a brand-new architecture designed to power the next generation of digital sovereignty. From GPU and AI workload support, to hybrid and edge cloud deployments and VMware re-virtualization, OpenNebula 7.0 is all about giving organizations full control over their infrastructure—wherever it runs. This update also comes packed with features that boost performance, resilience, and usability, including improved backup capabilities, smart resource management, and a simplified user experience.

This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s the foundation for sovereign AI Factories, distributed edge computing, and more sustainable digital ecosystems. Read the full release blog here.

📡 MESSAGE FROM THE ENGINEERING DECK
After the 7.0 milestone, the OpenNebula team is not resting! 7.2 is already on the anvil, getting into shape by our careful code artisans. Exciting new stuff in the pipeline: Sunstone will undergo a major overhaul, new storage migration operations, new OneForm component, to create remote OpenNebula clusters, new integrations with other datacenter components … everything you need to build a robust, enterprise ready Private Cloud :)

Innovation

OpenNebula Systems, as the chairing company of the IPCEI‑CIS Industry Facilitation Group, has led and co-authored the first official Reference Architecture for sovereign cloud-edge continuum. Backed by €3 billion in public and private investment, this modular framework spans infrastructure, virtualization, AI, and platform layers—designed to reduce vendor lock‑in, enforce compliance, and catalyze true European digital autonomy. On July 9, we unveiled Fact8ra, the first federated AI-as-a-Service platform, built using the IPCEI‑CIS framework and powered by OpenNebula 7.0. Fact8ra aggregates GPU resources from eight EU countries—letting users run private LLM instances (like Mistral, EuroLLM) and access external model catalogs. Its federation model spans HPC centers in Germany, France, Spain, and more—bringing sovereign AI to SMEs via interoperable, cloud-native infrastructure. This is a blueprint for building the next generation of AI factories across Europe. Get to know more here

The European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud recently handed over the Telco Cloud Reference Architecture (TCRA) to the European Commission, marking a crucial milestone for next-generation industrial infrastructure. Coordinated by OpenNebula Systems and backed by top European telcos, this framework enables flexible, multi-vendor, and interoperable cloud-edge solutions that power AI Factories and 5G networks. By combining mature virtualization with dynamic resource allocation, the TCRA ensures a future-proof platform ready for intelligent, distributed industrial services. Webinars

We kicked off the month with the panel “Accelerating AI Inference at the 5G Edge”,  where we discussed how the telecom industry is gearing up to support AI inference at the 5G edge. A big thank you to our panelists from the European Commission, Deutsche Telekom’s consulting arm, Detecon, KPN, Orange, and Tiscali for joining OpenNebula in this strategic conversation. See the full blog here—and don’t miss the chance to rewatch the recording.

Later on, we conducted the training session “An Introduction to OpenNebula”, a solid entry point for understanding the platform’s architecture and key features. Watch the session

Next up, experts in our “AI-Powered OpenNebula DRS” webinar explored the market context, presented the design principles and architecture behind OneDRS, showcased a live demo and held an interactive Q&A session. Check it out here

To round out the month, we hosted the second training session “Getting Started with OpenNebula OneDRS”, where we explored more in depth details of how to fine-tune advanced OneDRS settings for custom use cases and how to configure OneDRS policies. Expand your knowledge.

Exclusive Resources for OpenNebula Subscribers

Need to configure static routes inside your VMs? This month’s Knowledge Base article shows you how to leverage OpenNebula’s contextualization mechanism to define and manage static routes effectively—even for already running VMs.

How to Configure Static Routes using OpenNebula Contextualization Mechanism

Learn how to set static routes within VM templates using the ETHX_ROUTES attribute and apply them dynamically to running VMs through START_SCRIPT—all via CLI or the FireEdge Sunstone interface.

Key highlights include:

  • Defining static routes directly in VM templates with contextualization attributes
  • Applying routes to already running VMs using CLI commands
  • Managing contextualization scripts through the FireEdge Sunstone interface
  • Validating updates with VM logs and in-VM route checks.

Whether you’re streamlining network configurations or maintaining dynamic routing needs, this guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions to keep your VMs connected seamlessly.
