We’ve released OpenNebula 6.10.5 LTS, a maintenance update focused on stability, security, and reliability for production environments. This version includes important fixes across Sunstone, scheduling, authentication, backups, and virtualization workflows, along with the backported capability to modify ETH* context parameters on running VMs. Read the full release notes here

The release of OpenNebula 7.0.2 is right around the corner, featuring several key enhancements to improve the stability and performance of your cloud environment. What’s new:

  • Backup enhancements for Veeam and NetApp, providing greater reliability and performance
  • Expanded OS support for RHEL 10, AlmaLinux 10, and Debian 13
  • Enhanced vMotion Compatibility, ensuring smoother and more efficient VM migrations.

Development on OpenNebula 7.2 is in full swing, with a beta planned for December. This upcoming release will showcase key innovations such as OneForm, now available in Sunstone, which enables the creation of remote OpenNebula clusters both on-premises and on bare-metal cloud providers, and automating the deployment of hybrid multi-cloud environments.

This upcoming release will include native storage drivers to obtain maximum IO performance from PureStorage SANs, and Storage Live Migration to enable seamless data movement across nodes. Alongside these features, we’re continuing to advance performance, hardware support, and migration tooling for VMware and other legacy platforms. More details will be shared as we approach the beta release—stay tuned!

Enterprise Alliances

We’re proud to announce a strategic partnership with Canonical, enabling OpenNebula to deliver an Enterprise Subscription with built-in Ubuntu Pro Infra for hypervisor nodes. This integration not only simplifies deployment and lifecycle management, but significantly enhances security and compliance: Ubuntu Pro brings 10+ years of maintenance, live patching via Canonical Livepatch, and FIPS 140-3–compliant support. This partnership delivers a truly enterprise-grade virtualization and cloud stack—combining OpenNebula’s virtualization and orchestration power with Canonical’s trusted Ubuntu foundation. White Paper

We’re thrilled to introduce the OpenNebula AI Factory Reference Architecture, a new white paper that charts a clear blueprint for building next-generation AI infrastructure. As organizations scale their AI initiatives, they’re increasingly recognizing that traditional cloud-native stacks don’t deliver enough control, performance, or sovereign governance—and this architecture addresses exactly that need.

The reference design unifies high-performance computing, virtualization, and orchestration on a single IaaS platform, enabling multi-tenant AI factories with bare-metal efficiency. It supports deep integration with NVIDIA hardware—from Hopper and Blackwell GPUs to BlueField DPUs, NVLink, InfiniBand, and Spectrum-X—for training and inference workloads. Innovation

We’ve introduced a GitOps-based automated deployment workflow for OpenNebula control-planes, enabling fully reproducible, declarative provisioning systems of Frontend instances with just a single GitHub issue. Built on industry-standard automation tools (Terraform + Ansible), this approach ensures deployments remain infrastructure-agnostic, auditable, and version-controlled—ideal for organizations seeking consistent, repeatable cloud setups across testing, staging, or production environments. This month’s spotlight is on a practical configuration guide:

How to Configure Local Storage Datastore using Sunstone

Using multiple storage backends within a single OpenNebula installation is common, and local storage datastores—where each host uses its own local disks—can be particularly useful for certain workloads. This article walks you through configuring both system and image datastores with local storage, ensuring your VM disk images are properly transferred and managed via SSH.

You’ll find detailed step-by-step guidance on how to:

  • Log into Sunstone as the oneadmin user and access the Storage → Datastores section.
  • Create a System datastore with “Filesystem – SSH mode” as the storage backend, associating it with the correct cluster and defining additional attributes if needed.
  • Configure a corresponding Image datastore, selecting a compatible system datastore and verifying all attributes for smooth integration.
  • Finalize the setup so that both datastores are ready for production use.

By following this guide, administrators can efficiently manage local storage resources, streamline VM deployment, and ensure reliable data handling across hosts.
