Our team has been hard at work enhancing OpenNebula, focusing on storage efficiency, VM security, cloud-native integration, GPU-accelerated infrastructure, and support for the latest enterprise Linux distributions.

We’re also collaborating with NVIDIA on GB200 certification, bringing even more GPU capabilities and performing improvements to our platform.

Version 7.0.1: Exciting Updates Ahead 

  • Virtual TPM – Provides virtualized Trusted Platform Module support for enhanced VM security and Windows 11 compatibility.
  • Multi-tier Storage Caching – Uses fast SSD/NVMe as a cache in front of slower storage to improve I/O performance.
  • Ceph incremental backups – Supports incremental snapshots/backups from Ceph RBD volumes, saving both space and time.
  • LVM incremental backups – Enables delta-based backups of logical volumes to optimize storage efficiency.
  • OpenNebula CSI driver – Integrates with Kubernetes via the Container Storage Interface for dynamic volume provisioning.
  • NetApp incremental backup – Adds native support for NetApp snapshots and efficient incremental backup workflows.
  • Support for AlmaLinux 10 and RHEL 10 – Ensures compatibility with the latest enterprise Linux distributions.
  • SAML support – Provides federated authentication with SAML 2.0 for single sign-on and identity management.
  • GPU Monitoring – Collects metrics (utilization, memory, temperature) for GPUs assigned to VMs or containers.
  • Veeam incremental backup – Leverages Veeam integration to perform efficient incremental VM backups.
  • NVIDIA MIG support – Optimizes workload efficiency and isolation on NVIDIA GPUs.

📡 MESSAGE FROM THE ENGINEERING DECK
As you may know, OpenNebula 7.0 introduced a new version of the Web Interface, Sunstone. Since the release the team has been focusing on improving the User Experience, since we now have a solid basis on which to work on. So expect this interface to blow your mind shortly! OpenNebula 7.0.1 will start by stabilizing the platform, and OpenNebula 7.2 will bring it to another level!

Innovation

OpenNebula has teamed up with the University of Málaga’s MORSE group to create a fully virtualized Open vRAN private 5G appliance, combining open source tools like srsRAN and Open5GS with automated orchestration. With deployment times reduced by up to 90%, this innovation shows how OpenNebula can deliver real-world telco workloads to the edge efficiently, securely, and at scale—setting the stage for next-generation connectivity and future 6G applications. Experiences

OpenNebula’s Kubernetes Cluster API provider (CAPONE) has officially achieved SUSE Ready Certification for Rancher, marking a major step forward for seamless Kubernetes cluster management on OpenNebula. This certification ensures that CAPONE integrates smoothly with Rancher’s industry-leading platform, giving users a reliable, future-proof solution to provision and manage Kubernetes clusters across diverse environments. It reaffirms our commitment to delivering powerful, flexible, and open cloud-native infrastructure—making Kubernetes simpler, more consistent, and ready for the future. Read the full blog here.

In addition, OpenNebula Systems now integrates with HostBill, enabling hosting providers to combine OpenNebula’s powerful cloud stack with HostBill’s automation and billing module to offer fully flexible, usage-based services. Service providers can provision, scale, or downgrade/upgrade resources automatically, manage client lifecycles, and bill for traffic, storage, backups, templates, IPs and more—all with a streamlined, self-service experience. Encore Technologies, a U.S. data center provider, replaced costly, complex virtualization licensing by adopting OpenNebula in early 2024. Through a methodical, automated migration—including parallel testing, API integration and infrastructure reprovisioning—they migrated over 60% of their environments with a 90% success rate before year-end. This shift didn’t just reduce costs: it elevated Encore’s internal capabilities (KVM, Linux, automation), improved reliability, and has positioned them to build new IaaS offerings for future workloads, including AI research environments. On another note, U.S.-based cloud hosting provider Togglebox has adopted OpenNebula to deliver a highly flexible and efficient cloud platform tailored to customer needs. By leveraging OpenNebula’s powerful management capabilities and developing a custom integration with HostBill, Togglebox is able to offer advanced features such as metered billing for storage and snapshots, while ensuring a streamlined user experience. We were also present in the Open Source Community Day 2025.
