We’re excited to announce that the beta version of OpenNebula 7.2 is now available! While OpenNebula 7.0 “Phoenix” focused on the transition from legacy virtualization, OpenNebula 7.2 is built for production at scale. This release introduces deeper automation, hardware-rooted security, and the high-performance orchestration required for modern Sovereign Clouds and AI Factories.
Please note: As a beta release, this version is designed for testing and validation. We don’t recommend it for production use. Please help us stabilize the final release by reviewing the known issues and reporting any bugs via GitHub.
1. Optimized Infrastructure for AI
As AI workloads move into production, infrastructure must deliver predictable performance, deep hardware integration, and flexible execution models. OpenNebula 7.2 strengthens its accelerated infrastructure support.
- Integrated NVIDIA Fabric Manager. Advanced orchestration for NVSwitch and NVLink high-speed GPU interconnects ensures optimal multi-GPU topologies for AI training and HPC workloads.
- Spectrum-X Validation. Validated compatibility with NVIDIA Spectrum-X networking platforms, enabling high-performance, low-latency Ethernet fabrics optimized for large-scale AI clusters.
- GB200 Validation. Official validation on NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GB200 and GB300 systems, including VSwitch topologies, ensuring seamless orchestration of next-generation GPU-accelerated infrastructure.
- DPU Validation. Validated integration with NVIDIA BlueField DPUs, enabling network offloading, hardware-level isolation, and enhanced multi-tenant segmentation.
2. Scalable Architecture and Performance Enhancements
Large-scale and multi-tenant environments require efficient communication, operational visibility, and optimized resource handling. OpenNebula 7.2 introduces architectural improvements to support higher scale, improved concurrency, and enhanced system responsiveness.
- Next-Generation gRPC API. A modern gRPC-based API provides low-latency, high-throughput communication between components, improving responsiveness in large infrastructures with many concurrent operations.
- Integrated VM Logs. Real-time VM execution logs are now available directly in the Sunstone GUI, simplifying troubleshooting without requiring CLI access.
- IP Address Sharing. IP leasing for VM groups simplifies networking for multi-tier applications by reserving dedicated IP ranges for grouped workloads.
- Improved LXC Drivers. Production-ready LXC drivers provide VM-like lifecycle management for Linux containers, including NIC hot-plugging and disk snapshots, delivering agility with near-native performance.
3. Hardened Security for Sovereign Clouds and AI
Sovereign and regulated deployments require security controls from hardware trust anchors to access policies. OpenNebula 7.2 reinforces security across the stack.
- Confidential Computing & vTPM. Hardware-rooted trust and memory encryption in KVM protect sensitive workloads, with vTPM support enabling stronger workload integrity guarantees.
- Enforced Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). Administrators can enforce mandatory 2FA globally in Sunstone, ensuring consistent security policies across all users.
4. Enhanced Storage and Backup Support
Enterprise AI and cloud environments demand high-performance storage, operational flexibility, and robust data protection mechanisms. OpenNebula 7.2 expands storage capabilities and strengthens backup integrations to meet these requirements.
- Storage Live Migration. Storage Virtual Machines can now be migrated between LVM and file-based datastores—including shared, local, and LVM thin—without downtime. This enables seamless storage rebalancing and maintenance with no service interruption.
- Pure Storage FlashArray Support. A new native storage driver enables full block storage lifecycle management directly through the FlashArray REST API, delivering high performance and simplified operations.
- Enhanced Storage Performance. Multi-tier caching for local datastore drivers and major LVM backend tuning reduce storage bottlenecks and improve I/O efficiency.
- Efficient Backups. New NetApp incremental backup support reduces backup windows and storage consumption. Improvements to Veeam and oVirt API integrations enhance restoration reliability.
5. Simplified Deployment and Installation
Modern IT environments require streamlined deployment models and alignment with enterprise operating system lifecycles. OpenNebula 7.2 simplifies installation and broadens platform compatibility.
- OneForm (Automated Cluster Provisioning). A new service designed for distributed environments. OneForm enables automated deployment and configuration of OpenNebula clusters on demand.
- Expanded OS Support: Official support for the latest operating systems, including AlmaLinux 10, RHEL 10, and Debian 13.
- Latest OS Support. Official support for AlmaLinux 10, RHEL 10, SUSE 16, and Debian 13.
