From September 16-18, 2024, the Linux Foundation Open Source Summit Europe took place in Vienna, Austria, bringing together developers, technologists, and open source leaders from around the world. OpenNebula Systems’ experts contributed to discussions on cloud neutrality, confidential computing, and 5G/Edge.

This year’s summit was a platform for OpenNebula Systems to showcase its efforts in transforming the open source landscape through these technologies. Let us share some of the highlights from the event!

IPCEI-CIS: Cloud and Edge Neutrality in Europe

On September 18, Alberto P. Martí, VP of Open Source Innovation at OpenNebula Systems, delivered a keynote “How will IPCEI-CIS redefine Open Source in the EU?”. In this talk, based on Alberto’s perspective as Chair of the Industry Facilitation Group of the project, he explored the global objectives of the IPCEI-CIS and how it is going to create a multi-provider cloud-edge ecosystem that will allow cloud users to reduce their dependencies on hyperscalers and Big Tech vendors.

His presentation sparked interesting discussions on how the initiative will reshape the future of cloud neutrality and foster greater collaboration among cloud and edge infrastructure providers and open source tech vendors, not only inside Europe but also across the world. This conversation gave way later on to further discussions on the role that public administrations are expected to play in this process (e.g. by becoming early adopters of new open source technologies) as part of a panel “What Is Next for Public Sector Open Source Collaboration?”.

Confidential Computing Mini Summit: Enhancing Data Security Across the Cloud-Edge Continuum

On September 19, Francisco Picolini, Open Source Community Manager at OpenNebula Systems, spoke at the Confidential Computing Mini Summit. His presentation, “Supporting Confidential Computing across Europe’s Cloud-Edge Continuum,” focused on how the new OpenNebula is going to be able to support the management of confidential VMs across multi-provider edge cloud environments, based on the innovation that will take place under our EU-funded IPCEI-CIS project. The final objective is to ensure that European data sovereignty is upheld through the highest security standards, and that cloud users have access to the latest developments in Confidential Computing.

The session reinforced the importance of data sovereignty and its critical role in ensuring security across Europe. The audience, composed of experts in Confidential Computing (including some of our colleagues from SUSE, with whom we collaborate in R&D projects like COGNIT), asked several insightful questions, eager to learn more about the new framework proposed by OpenNebula Systems and other vendors involved in the IPCEI-CIS initiative.

Sylva Mini Summit: Shaping the Future of 5G and Edge in Telecom

Also on September 19, Juan Carlos Garcia, Principal Technology Advisor at OpenNebula Systems, and Madalin Neag, Senior 5G Edge Product Manager, took part in the Sylva Mini Summit, focusing on the future of 5G and edge technologies in the telecom sector. 

OpenNebula Systems has been a supporter of this open source initiative for over a year. Our team’s participation in this mini-summit marks the beginning of a more active role in this group and represents another step in our commitment to supporting the telecom industry in their process of producing open source solutions together. Through workshops and discussions, they shared insights into how OpenNebula Systems is driving innovation in 5G and edge via innovation projects like IPCEI-CIS and ONEedge5G, offering telco professionals the tools and technologies they need to navigate this fast-evolving space using sovereign technologies like OpenNebula.

Conclusion

As OpenNebula Systems, we are always happy to participate actively in discussions at the Linux Foundation events, and to lead the many on-going debates on the future of open source, data privacy, and cloud and telecom innovation. This LF Open Source Summit offered a platform for meaningful conversations and set the stage for further collaboration and innovation in the open source community with major stakeholders in the cloud-edge ecosystem.
