ℹ️ Visit OpenNebula.io/mastering-containers for detailed notes and guidance on how to use OpenNebula to deploy Kubernetes clusters and orchestrate containers at the edge.

K3s is a CNCF-certified, lightweight Kubernetes distribution especially designed for resource-constrained environments, such as edge, IoT, and embedded devices. Originally developed by Rancher Labs, K3s was accepted by the CNCF as a Sandbox project in mid-2020. Packaged as a single binary (<100MB) and with minimal external dependencies, K3s is great for both development and production environments. K3s is easy to install and provides simple but powerful “batteries-included” features, including a local storage provider, a service load balancer, a Helm controller, and the Traefik ingress controller. Moreover, K3s supports a variety of architectures, including AMD64, ARM64, and ARMv7.

OpenNebula is a powerful, but easy-to-use, open source Cloud & Edge Computing platform. It provides a production-ready solution that combines VMware and KVM virtual machines with LXC containers and Firecracker microVMs, on top of which you can run complex multiVM services, orchestrate application containers, or deploy Kubernetes and K3s clusters. Thanks to its Hybrid and Edge connectors, OpenNebula allows you to grow your Enterprise Cloud or DevOps infrastructure on-demand avoiding vendor lock-in, automatically provisioning resources from different public cloud and edge providers such as AWS and Equinix Metal. OpenNebula is a Silver Member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and a proud Gold Sponsor of the Kubernetes on Edge Day 2021 ⬇️

OpenNebula’s new K3s Virtual Appliance, already available from its Public Marketplace, allows OpenNebula users to easily deploy at the edge multi-node K3s clusters with one server and multiple worker agents. These K3s service components are deployed by OpenNebula as secure and fast Firecracker microVMs, a new open source virtualization technology originally developed by AWS as part of its Fargate and Lambda services. Firecracker provides enhanced security and workload isolation over traditional VMs, while enabling the speed and resource efficiency of application containers, which makes this technology ideal for edge deployments.

Managing Large-Scale Kubernetes Deployments at the Edge 🚀

📅 Join us at SUSECON Digital 2021 to find out how to automate the management of large-scale Kubernetes deployments at the edge by combining K3s, OpenNebula, Firecracker and Rancher. The case study that we will present at SUSECON along with OpenNebula’s partner FullStackS includes a demonstration showcasing how this technical solution, based on the automatic registration of K3s clusters on Rancher and the use of Fleet for GitOps, provides an innovative approach for leveraging Kubernetes edge deployments at scale.
