Technology

This month marks a major leap forward for OpenNebula as we continue to expand the platform’s capabilities for enterprise, AI, and edge deployments.

We’ve just released the beta version of OpenNebula 7.0 “Phoenix”—our next-generation platform! It includes key features for VMware migration, AI and GPU workload support, improved storage and backup, and UI enhancements. OpenNebula 7.0 lays the foundation for a more modular, flexible, and future-proof cloud management experience. Explore the full details here.

Next up, OpenNebula enables secure, decentralized AI with FedX—letting you train models across clouds without moving sensitive data. You can learn more and watch the full demo that walks you through the entire process. Read more here.

Looking at performance and efficiency, we’ve also published a blog on AI inference at the edge using OpenNebula and Ampere ARM64. This post shows how to run lightweight AI inference on ARM64 servers with OpenNebula and deploy Ray and Hugging Face models using OneDeploy for fast, secure, energy-efficient edge AI—no GPUs needed. Check out the guide here.

Finally, we explored the growing trend of cloud repatriation—OpenNebula simplifies moving workloads from hyperscalers to on-prem edge infrastructure. The post highlights how OpenNebula enables organizations to regain control over infrastructure, reduce costs, and ensure sovereignty. See the full post here.

Knowledge Base Articles

Exclusive Resources for OpenNebula Subscribers

Need to boost VM performance for demanding workloads? This month’s Knowledge Base article walks you through practical steps to fine-tune images in OpenNebula for improved responsiveness.

How to Tune Images for Better VM Performance

When dealing with latency-sensitive applications, tuning your VM images can make a significant difference. This guide covers performance optimization techniques using the latest Ubuntu 24.04 image from the OpenNebula Public Marketplace.

Key steps include:

  1. Decompress and defragment your qcow2 images using qemu-img convert to reduce I/O bottlenecks.
  2. Update cache and I/O policies—use CACHE=”none” for safer operation, or CACHE=”writeback” for faster performance (with risks).
  3. Use virtio drivers and confirm proper configuration of NFS datastores and 802.1Q networking for maximum efficiency.

With these changes, you can unlock significantly faster VM response times—ideal for high-performance or edge computing workloads.
