November 2020 OpenNebula Newsletter contains the highlights of the OpenNebula project and its Community throughout the month.

Technology

November has been like a roller coaster, one awesome event after another, starting with our Engineering Team producing EE Maintenance Release 5.12.6 in the early days of the month! 🎒 As usual, Corporate Users with an active OpenNebula Subscription can access the latest version of our Enterprise Edition from their private repositories.

In mid-November, and given that our recent integrations with both AWS’ Firecracker and the Docker Hub marketplace have allowed us to develop a new native model for container orchestration, we officially announced that OpenNebula had joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Silver Member. Today, a couple of weeks after that, we’ve just confirmed that our Kubernetes Virtual Appliance has passed all the tests to be included into the CNCF Landscape as a Certified Kubernetes installer! How about that for starters? 😎

Community

And speaking about joining amazing initiatives… Back in June we mentioned that OpenNebula, as part of its ONEedge project, was already contributing to GAIA-Xβ€”the future European virtual hyperscaler πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί This month we’ve announced that OpenNebula has gone a step further in its commitment to this project by becoming a Day-1 Member of the GAIA-X Association, the international non-profit organization that is going to coordinate its future developments. One of our main tasks will be to make sure that OpenNebula Cloud Service Providers and Corporate Users can get the most out of this new federated data infrastructure!

And one of those Cloud Service Providers is the Dutch company BIT, a long time user of OpenNebula, as well as an avid contributor to its development and evolution over the years. Now, they have joined our Partner Program as an official Managed Service Provider, through which they’ll offer a comprehensive private cloud service to their customers based on our Enterprise Edition πŸŽ–οΈ

As if that was not inspiring enough, we’ve recently fired up an initiative to publish a collection of testimonials by users and customers, sharing their specific requirements and ensuing experiences using OpenNebula. These new Case Studies are designed to help other members of the Community get a feel for how OpenNebula is meeting the needs of organizations across the globe. Special thanks to our initial contributors: Qt, Perspecta, Dustin, and The Department of Environment and Spatial Planning (dOMG)!

Outreach

If back in October, for whatever reason, you couldn’t attend our amazing live demo at Rancher’s Computing on the Edge with Kubernetes event showing how to use OpenNebula + K3s to deploy multiplayer game servers on the edge, worry not, the recording is now available on demand! And the same applies to this month’s webinar, Building an Elastic Cloud using Equinix Metal resources at the Edge. Many thanks to our amazing guest speaker, Jeremy Tanner (Developer Relations at Equinix), for joining us for this community event!

PS: Take care of yourselves and of those around you. All our support to those who are fighting the pandemic on the front lines! πŸ’ͺ

When might we see LXD node support for Ubuntu 20.04?
