Technology

As you know , in April we released the first stable version of the new OpenNebula 6.0 series, but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about OpenNebula 5.12! Given that it’s an LTS, we’ll be providing support to EE users until late 2022, including new updates like the one we’ve published in June: EE LTS Maintenance Release 5.12.10. Among other novelties, this is the fist 5.12.x that includes support for vSphere 7! 🤓

And speaking about VMware… have you already had a look at our new vOneCloud page? We hope this new resource will help people find all the relevant materials they need for evaluating OpenNebula on their existing VMware infrastructure. And if your favorite virtualization technology is Linux system containers, we’ve got something for you too: here you have some tips about how to start the transition from LXD to LXC 🐧

In May we added new drivers to our Provider Catalog for you to be able to expand your OpenNebula cloud on-demand with remote resources from Google Cloud, DigitalOcean, and Vultr too ⚡ To make things easier, we’ll be producing some tutorials about these integrations, so this month we’ve started with a nice screencast on how to add Google Cloud resources to your OpenNebula cloud ➡️ And if you are considering setting-up a multi-cloud environment, well… you should definitely read this recent article on cloud repatriation by our CEO! 📝

Community

Our team has been quite busy in June updating our Public Marketplace with new virtual appliances. Yesterday we announced an update to our new K3s appliance, which now comes with the possibility of configuring a self-registration of the K3s clusters you deploy with OpenNebula onto an existing Rancher environment; this new feature makes it easier, for example, to incorporate them into your GitOps workflows 😉 Interested in using this approach to manage large-scale Kubernetes deployments at the edge? Watch a demo we presented at SUSECON Digital 2021 along with OpenNebula’s new partner FullStacks.

But K3s has not been the only addition to our Marketplace! In June we released a new version of our CNCF-certified Kubernetes 1.21 appliance as well as an updated GitLab CE appliance with Patch Release 13.12.3. And if you are ‘slightly’ worried about what’s going on with CentOS… well, here you have a couple of virtual appliances for you to start playing with potential alternatives: AlmaLinux 8 and Rocky Linux 8 🤹 Enjoy!

Outreach

June has been another month full of amazing events, including a 🇪🇺 HORIZON CLOUD‘s community event on open source initiatives for Cloud Computing in Europe, the Open Source Infrastructure Conference (in which we explained how we are building the first open source Edge Computing platform for GAIA-X), and also the 2021 edition of the 🇪🇸 OpenExpo Virtual Experience (where we joined our colleagues from Microsoft Azure, OVHcloud, and Tecnalia for a great panel on GAIA-X, in which we explained our experience as Day-1 Members of the GAIA-X Association). We’ll be publishing the recordings of all these events on our Community Blog as soon as they are available! 📺

And speaking of events… remember that the 9th edition of our OpenNebulaConf has been rescheduled and will finally be taking place on March 24-25, 2022, in Brussels (Belgium) 😉

PS: Take care of yourselves and of those around you. All our support to those who are fighting the pandemic on the front lines! 💪
