The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona was a remarkable event, boasting over 100,000 visitors from 205 countries. This year’s congress showcased a staggering 2,700 exhibitors, sponsors, and partners, alongside 1,100 speakers.

For OpenNebula Systems, exhibiting at the world’s largest mobile telephony congress allowed us to immerse ourselves in the epicenter of telecom and tech innovation. We engaged with numerous companies, particularly those in the Telco Cloud and Edge sector, demonstrating OpenNebula’s cutting-edge capabilities in managing highly-distributed edge cloud environments for the telecom industry.

Showcasing OpenNebula for Telco Cloud & Edge

Our highlight was presenting OpenNebula’s amazing potential for Telco Cloud & Edge Deployments. We explored four main Telco Edge use cases for both fixed and mobile networks, emphasizing the transition to open source solutions from proprietary ones. The session offered insights into modernizing networks, simplifying operations, speeding up 5G deployments, and adopting frameworks like Open RAN.

Key Highlights from Our Presentation:

  • Highly Distributed NFV Deployment: Showcasing OpenNebula’s cloud management capabilities across numerous geo-distributed clusters to support Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) with high-performance throughput.
  • Neutral 5G Operators Hosting: Highlighting an integrated solution that supports multiple operators on the same hardware infrastructure, promoting cost efficiency with minimal vendor lock-in.
  • Fully Disaggregated Central Office for 5G Telco Edge: Presenting microDC installations at Edge Nodes for 5G, supporting O-RAN and edge cloud services in line with Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) architecture.
  • Migration from VMware to Open Virtualization: Detailing how OpenNebula facilitates the shift from VMware to a KVM-based open source platform, enhancing flexibility and innovation in provisioning and hybrid & edge clouds computing.

A recurring theme among attendees was the curiosity and inquiries about migrating from VMware. Anticipating this trend, we published a white paper that outlines the best practices for transitioning to OpenNebula, reaffirming our position as the best VMware alternative in the market.
