OpenNebula 6.10 “Bubble” is the sixth stable release in the OpenNebula 6 series. This LTS version, which will receive support for the next three years, brings significant improvements in backup functionality and substantial updates to our Sunstone User Interface. OpenNebula 6.10 “Bubble” further simplifies your transition from VMware to KVM, offering innovative features and a streamlined process for building hybrid cloud infrastructure, all while keeping full control in your hands.

Key Highlights of OpenNebula 6.10

  1. Upgraded Backup Features

Building on valuable feedback from our customers and users since OpenNebula 6.8, we’ve enhanced our backup capabilities with several advancements:

  • Incremental backups: now based on snapshots for increased efficiency.
  • In-place restores: easily replace the disk of the VMs you want to restore.
  • Selective disk restore: restore a single disk without affecting others associated with the virtual machine.
  • Custom backup locations: define specific backup locations per datastore to address storage needs effectively.
  1. Enhanced PCI Passthrough

We’ve refined our PCI passthrough support, with more improvements expected soon:

  • Generic device attach/detach: simplify the process without needing to destroy and recreate VMs.
  • Expanded GPU support: greater flexibility with GPUs and virtual GPUs, reflecting their growing importance.
  1. Poweroff and Suspend Recovery

OpenNebula 6.10 now supports recovery operations for VMs that are powered off or suspended, enhancing operational resilience.

  1. Multi-Tenancy Developments

We’ve introduced several changes to better support multi-tenancy:

  • Generic quotas: set and manage your own disk quotas, moving beyond predefined limits.
  • Restricted attributes: new restrictions for images and Virtual Networks provide finer control.
  1. Integration with New Linux Distributions

OpenNebula 6.10 now supports both Ubuntu 24 and Debian 12, expanding its compatibility with modern Linux environments.

  1. New Components in Community Edition

The integration of Prometheus and support for Restic backups have been contributed upstream from the Enterprise Edition.

  1. Simplified Automated Installation

We’ve added new playbooks and roles that allow you to deploy an OpenNebula cloud in a simple and convenient way.

  1. Smooth Migration from VMware

With our updated OneSwap tool, the process of migrating your virtual machines from vCenter Server to OpenNebula Cloud is now even more streamlined and efficient.

Spotlight on the Modernized Sunstone Web User Interface

OpenNebula 6.10 FireEdge Sunstone

We’re excited to introduce the fully-featured FireEdge Sunstone in OpenNebula 6.10:

  • FireEdge Sunstone overview: a reference to the backend server supporting this Sunstone frontend. It will eventually support other web interfaces, such as OneProvision Graphical User Interface. Once fully transitioned, this interface will be known simply as Sunstone.
  • Legacy Ruby Sunstone: will remain in LTS for three more years without new features. Future enhancements will be exclusive to the new interface.
  • Feature parity achieved: FireEdge Sunstone matches all the functionality of Ruby Sunstone, making it a suitable replacement for end users and administrators.
  • Modern technologies: built with a Node.js server, React framework, and Guacamole for VNC, RDP, and SSH connectivity via console. Websockets ensure dynamic resource adjustments in the interface.
  • What’s ahead: with a modern code base, we can more effectively enhance the look, feel, and user experience of FireEdge Sunstone—an evolution that was challenging to achieve with the older Ruby Sunstone code.

Conclusion

As always, OpenNebula 6.10 is named after a nebula—the Bubble Nebula (Caldwell 11). This H II region emission nebula, located in the constellation Cassiopeia, is known for the “bubble” created by the stellar wind from the massive, young star SAO 20575.

OpenNebula 6.10 “Bubble” is recognized as a stable release and is therefore available for updating production environments.
