Technology
This has been an exciting month, right from the very beginning! On March 1, after months of hard work, we released the first Beta of the new OpenNebula 6.0 “Mutara! 🚀 Among many other novelties, this new major release comes with a series of innovative edge features—developed in the context of our ONEedge initiative—to deploy on-demand distributed edge cloud environments based on OpenNebula. These new edge computing features enable IT organizations to deploy true hybrid and multi-cloud environments that avoid vendor lock-in, reducing operational costs, expanding service availability, and enabling new ultra-low-latency applications ⚡
We are very thankful for the valuable feedback we’ve received from testers and developers during this month. And it’s been thanks to that feedback that we’ve been able to produce a second Beta and, finally, a great Release Candidate! 🤩 So, keep an eye on our social media because the new stable release is truly around the corner! And all this is happening in the same month we celebrate the 13th anniversary of OpenNebula’s first Technology Preview, released on March 26, 2008—and in case you were wondering… yes, we are actually two years older than OpenStack 😜
Community
This month we’ve announced that OpenNebula has formally joined LF Edge, a multi-vendor initiative led by the Linux Foundation that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing. But that’s not all! We’ve also confirmed that OpenNebula will be sponsoring the Kubernetes on Edge Day (May 4), a promising event organized by CNCF that comes at a time when we are expanding our support for Kubernetes (e.g. by creating an image with a preinstalled K3s binary for Firecracker, now available from the OpenNebula Marketplace) 😉
And the OpenNebula Community has been quite active in March too! We’ve seen, for example, LINBIT announcing the support for the new OpenNebula 6.0 as part of the release of LINSTOR-OpenNebula v.1.1.0, as well as our colleagues from Oracle announcing the successful development, in collaboration with Rice University, of a new open source driver for OpenNebula to be able to interact with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure! “We are delighted that this project with Oracle has enabled Oracle and Rice to contribute this resource back to the OpenNebula community,” said Klara Jelinkova, CIO at Rice University. Stay tuned, more news about this cool integration coming soon! 🤓
Outreach
And this month has been full of exciting events, including Edge Computing World Europe, in which we’ve participated with a mind-blowing preview of OpenNebula 6.0, showing its new edge provisioning tooling and how easy it is now to deploy Kubernetes at the edge. And a few days later, we contributed to the new CNCF On-Demand Webinar series with an amazing demo showing how to use the new version of OpenNebula to deploy K3s clusters for multiplayer gaming, using Firecracker and also Agones 🎮
And next month is going to be quite interesting as well… So far, we’ve confirmed our participation in DCD>Building the Edge (April 15), where we’ll share a panel on the future of edge computing with our colleagues from Equinix and the Open Compute Project, and we’ll also have a major presence—needless to say—at the LINBIT OpenNebula TechDays (April 20-21), where we’ll join our friends from LINBIT to explore together the many benefits of combining their software-defined storage solution with OpenNebula. Don’t forget to register as soon as possible!
PS: Take care of yourselves and of those around you. All our support to those who are fighting the pandemic on the front lines! 💪
