June brought more momentum as we continued enhancing OpenNebula 7.0 “Phoenix” and expanding our edge and AI capabilities.
We’re just moments away from launching OpenNebula 7.0 “Phoenix”—our most powerful release yet, and our Release Candidate is already out. This next-generation version brings enterprise-grade features like AI-powered workload scheduling and seamless integration with Veeam and NetApp. But beyond the feature list, the real story is what this means for your infrastructure: lower costs, greater flexibility, and performance that scales. With OpenNebula, you get a streamlined, efficient alternative to VMware—one that’s easier to adopt, easier to run, and built for the hybrid and edge-native environments of today. You can get to know more here.
As organizations scale their private and hybrid cloud environments, many are realizing that Kubernetes alone isn’t enough. In a recent blog post, we break down the common misconceptions around Kubernetes as a complete cloud solution, and show how OpenNebula fills in the gaps. By offering full VM and container orchestration, enterprise-grade multi-tenancy, dynamic edge provisioning, and unified infrastructure management, OpenNebula enables a secure, flexible, and cost-effective alternative to complex DIY Kubernetes stacks. Read the full post.
We’ve also introduced AI-powered workload scheduling with OneDRS—an intelligent resource management system that automatically places workloads based on performance, availability, and efficiency. This is a big step forward in making OpenNebula smarter and more autonomous, especially for complex, distributed environments. Explore more.
In the spirit of lightweight edge innovation, we’ve published a practical guide on running Kubernetes clusters on ARM64 hardware and OpenNebula’s OneKE toolset. This setup supports energy-efficient AI and edge workloads on low-power devices. OpenNebula handles the underlying infrastructure, ensuring smooth VM provisioning, monitoring, and backup operations. This use case reflects our commitment to enabling scalable, efficient, and open cloud-native solutions at the edge. Check out the full blog with the detailed screencast for a full walkthrough.
📡 MESSAGE FROM THE ENGINEERING DECK
With the 7.0 Phoenix Release Candidate release last week a new milestone has been reached, closing the gap between OpenNebula and VMware deployments. The final version will be out in the first week of July, so the team is shifting focus to work on the 7.2 roadmap. New integrations are on the menu to widen the ever evolving OpenNebula ecosystem. Also we are working on validating OpenNebula in different hardware configurations and use cases, cloud providers, and in interesting scenarios for Disaster Recovery. This is being published in the revamped documentation, take a look.
