Technology

This past month was thrilling for us, not just because it was a leap year, but also because we released OpenNebula 6.8.2 Enterprise Edition. This exclusive version for customers with an active OpenNebula Subscription incorporates, as usual, additional bug fixes and software patches with minor enhancements developed by OpenNebula Systems.

As most of you might already know, we’ve also simplified the creation of custom appliances for OpenNebula clouds through the new one-apps tool. Dive into our latest blog here to discover the easiest and most efficient process to build your own VM templates the same way we produce the ones for the OpenNebula Public MarketPlace πŸ˜‰

πŸ“‘ MESSAGE FROM THE ENGINEERING DECK
The OpenNebula team is working hard on the next version of OpenNebula, with the goal of making your Cloud Manager even more flexible! Generic quotas are a great addition, allowing the creation of new models of cloud provisioning. Also, FireEdge Sunstone is getting close to the end line, with newly-added tabs like Clusters, ACLs, and Virtual Network Templates; and finishing others like Marketplaces, Support, and Virtual Router. Onwards and upwards!

We’re excited to announce the return of the OpenNebula TechDays, this year in collaboration with Deloitte. The upcoming event in Madrid (Spain) will explore how public institutions in Europe are integrating open source technologies into their cloud strategies, the challenges they encounter, and how initiatives like the IPCEI-CIS are fostering technological sovereignty and vendor neutrality in the EU cloud market. Don’t miss outβ€”Register Now!

Following our webinar series, last month we hosted the one-apps webinar, performing a live demo to illustrate how to build custom appliances for OpenNebula, and inviting contributions to this new open source tool by OpenNebula Systems. Watch the full video here! Stay tuned for next webinar, where we’ll explain how to easily migrate from VMware to OpenNebula! πŸ”“

We are also delighted to announce the start of our latest innovation project ONEedge5G, which is funded by the NextGenerationEU programme! This 18-month-long project will conduct industrial research on Artificial Intelligence techniques and Zero-Touch resource management methods for the efficient deployment and operation of distributed 5G/6G edge environments. Read all about it here.

Outreach

πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ FOSDEM last month was electrifying! Our long-standing participation, whether it’s the waffles or fries drawing us back, remains a highlight. Apart from being part of the sponsoring companies that regularly support this massive open source event, we delivered two talks: one on our integration with Ceph for cloud-edge continuum deployments, and another on our latest AIOps framework that leverages Prometheus with AI techniques for workload optimization. Read about our FOSDEM experience here.

Innovation at FOSDEM 2024

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ MWC Barcelona 2024 was another eagerly awaited event where we exhibited. The booth was fantastic, and the event itself was an extraordinary experience! Meeting numerous companies in search of a VMware alternative confirmed that our timing was perfect. Apart from having presented a talk on how you can accelerate your 5G Telco Edge deployments with OpenNebula, we also demonstrated how OpenNebula could revolutionize your Enterprise Cloud, Telco Cloud, and Edge infrastructure. Stay tuned for a detailed blog post about our experiencesβ€”you won’t want to miss it next year!

Looking ahead, March promises more adventures as we gear up for the DCD Broadcast event where we will explore how edge data centers are contributing to Europe’s sustainability. Get ready to join us online here.Β
